Haiku Poetry Review

by | Apr 18, 2014 | Editorial

There's a wonderful new children's haiku poetry book called, Hi Koo, A Year of Seasons by Jon J. Muth.

Koo is an adorable panda bear who accompanies the reader on a tour through the seasons.
The book with its delightful illustrations invites cuddling up with a child to read, but it isn't only children who will love it.
As a teacher, I believe the Author's Note about haiku is one of the clearest and most excellent explanations of the form that I have ever come across. And the poems themselves fulfill the promise of haiku: they capture essence and give us a snapshot of a present moment experience. At the same time we feel a pleasant momentum as the book takes us through the year.
One of my favorites in the book:
Icicles
reach down with dripping fingers
will they touch the ground?
Do you have a favorite haiku that you feel captures a moment in time and touches you?
